DAMN, IT’S MAY???

Damn, it’s May??? I just realized I haven’t checked in since January…I’ve been busy. If you haven’t been out to see Jesse and Brian, the new band guys, you’re not that cool. We’ve had some killer shows lately…made our triumphant return to Workplay in Birmingham. You fine folks never let us down. Oh yeah, forgot to mention, I had my first number one single at radio with “Another Song Nobody Will Hear.” I guess someone (or a few someones) heard it. Thanks to Texas/Red Dirt radio for making it #1 two weeks in a row and a BIG thanks to my friend Wade Bowen for singing it with me. Glad you guys dug it and I appreciate all of you who come sing us and sing it back to us. RockBoat was a blast. Loved getting to hang with Brandi Carlile, if you don’t know her stuff go get it. She’s a badass. Speaking of badasses, another big thanks to Gary Alan for having us out to play with him at The Ryman a couple weeks ago. Gary and all his guys are great, killer show and I’ll jump at any chance to go play the mother church of country music.

As some of you may have seen, I recently lost the ACM Award for “Song Of The Year.” I have now lost the CMA Award, the Grammy and the ACM Award…I believe this gives me the dubious distinction of being the first man to “win” what we are calling the “Triple Frown Award.” In all seriousness, it IS an honor to be nominated and I can’t thank the fine folks at the ACMs enough for taking such great care of us. I didn’t walk away empty handed, I got a bad ass nominee gift bag which I promptly gave to my wife and it earned me a trip to the blackjack table. That’ a winner for all involved.

Before I sign off of here, there’s one more update. The new record is done. We’re finishing some mixes, but stay tuned and you’ll be hearing more REALLY soon. I CAN tell you we debuted a song called “Never Give In” the other night in Birmingham and, if you show up to a show and the mood catches us right, you might hear some new stuff trickle out. Thanks to all you folks who care about my music, I can’t wait to share it with you.

Happy New Year

WH_SLIDER_940px_470px_02

So I suppose a Happy 2013 is in order.  Hope y’all are having a good one this far. Shaping up to be a busy one here too.  As I type I’m sitting here listening to my pal Charlie Brocco put together the rough mixes of what will be my 9th studio album. Very excited. There will be lots more to talk about there soon. First we’ve got to get a few other things together.

We are doing drummer auditions this weekend and I’m excited about the opportunity to play with these guys. Hope we find a good ‘un. Then we will start working on a new guitarist shortly after that. We’ve gotta get ourselves road ready as soon as possible.

Getting more excited by the day about going to the Grammy Awards on the 10th. The fact that there’s even a nomination is still pretty surreal. Win or lose I promise I’m incredibly thankful AND I promise there’ll be a funny tweet or two either way.

The new single ‘Another Song Nobody Will Hear’ with my pal Wade Bowen is out right now and doing well at Texas/Red Dirt Radio. So if you’re in those areas please listen, call, request and enjoy. We’ll be heading that way to see y’all soon.

I suppose that’s it for now.  There will be more information soon on other stuff. As always thanks for the continued love and support. Now I’ve gotta get back to this ‘working’ stuff. See y’all soon

Tour Dates in Nashville – And other stuff

Big news on the tour front (insert teletype sound here!)…two nights in Nashville at Third & Lindsley – Nov 23 & 24- go on sale MONDAY at 10 AM. Playing Nashville after Thanksgiving has become an annual thing for us, but this one will be extra special. Friday night’s show will go to benefit Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Trauma Department. Since my wreck four years ago, I’ve wanted to do something to return the favor for those fine folks saving my life and limbs. Here it is. Come Friday night, it’s for a good cause. And then Saturday…Oh boy. We’ve got some tricks up our sleeves. Let’s just call it “Will Hoge and Friends”. Shows will both be awesome…come twice (hell, that’s my motto). Get your tickets early and buy lots of them, these shows will be packed and you don’t want to be the one who can’t get in the door. Nailing down who’s gonna open each night. Stay tuned, it’s gonna be good.

Also, if you haven’t heard, I’m doing a solo tour starting 11/30 in Port Clinton, OH. I’m calling it “Let Me Be Lonely Tour: 2012″. Playing some really cool rooms, gonna play some new stuff nobody has heard, some old stuff people always ask me but I never can remember. Just me and a guitar or several. See you on the road…

MODERN AMERICAN PROTEST MUSIC

WH_SLIDER_940px_470px_35

Had a great time Friday in Athens GA opening for drivin’ n cryin’. Thanks Nate Hufford for playing drums with us. Had a late night drive back to Nashville. Made it in time for some 5 year old soccer. Then we did the Opry again on Saturday night. Out pal Ken Coomer sat in on drums. That was awesome. One of my favorite drummers playing with me in one of my favorite venues…..what’s not to like? Anyhow it was awesome. So glad to have the opportunities to play with that family of musicians.

Today marks the release of my 8th studio album, ‘modern american protest music.’ I’m very excited to have it out there. We are doing it sans label so we’d appreciate y’all spreading the word if you like the album. Doing a stage it show from my house tonight at 8pm cst to celebrate. Tune in.

As always I can’t thank y’all enough for the continued support. Lots more news coming soon. Thanks guys.

BUSY

WH_SLIDER_940px_470px_50

At the Minnesota State Fair tonight and tomorrow. Should be lots of fun. Sorry about the lack of blogs lately but there’s been a lot going on around here. Where to start? Got let go by a manager. Then hired a new one. Got out of another record deal. Fired a drummer. Had a number 1 single. Played a bunch of shows. Finished a new album. Preparing to start ANOTHER one too. See? Busy.

So if you’ve been to a show in the last month you’ve noticed that Siggi is no longer with us. I let him go. Siggi and I have played tons of shows together. We’ve been friends for nearly a decade. The latter part of that will never change. We all wish him the best. Thanks to McCoy Gibbs for filling in short notice on drums a while back. For now the young bearded fella on the drums is Chris Payne. He’s cool. He likes coffee so Blade likes him a lot. If you see him after a show, say hello. He’s good to have around.

Got to celebrate my first #1 song on August 21. I can’t say thank you enough to my friends in the Eli Young Band for recording the song and working so hard at getting it played and heard. The party was funny. Never been to one of those before and it was pretty surreal. Wife and the boys came. Boys were pissed there wasn’t any cake. Party=cake to a 5 and 2 year old! So if I’m lucky enough go have another #1, just FYI, there WILL be cake!!

I guess that leads us to this new album. It’s called ‘Modern American Protest Music’. It’s out September 18th. I’m so proud of it. I’m thrilled at the response the songs are getting live already. Some folks will roll their eyes and say, ‘musicians should just sing and not talk about politics.’ Pardon me as I respectfully disagree. If I didn’t make this album then creatively I’m unable to move forward and that’s not something I can do. I hope y’all will give it a listen. It’s ok to disagree or not like it. It’s ok to talk about that. I believe that’s one of the biggest problems we face is that no one really engages in conversation about these things enough. So all you sissy-ass-liberal-tree-hugging fans and all you right-wing-conservative-gun-loving fans prepare to meet in the middle and give the album a listen. Then we can all commune at the show over that time honored bi-partisan tradition that we call rock and roll!! Ok? Deal. We are without a label again so we are putting this on out ourselves so please help spread the word.
Alright. I smell fair food. Gotta go. See y’all soon.

A Folded Flag

A Folded Flag

So I’ve debated on whether or not to let you guys hear this. It’s a new track from the forthcoming ‘Modern American Protest Music’. This is really rough. It’s unmixed. It’s just a scratch vocal. But I figure we are all friends right?  And if I can’t let a few thousand friends hear a work in progress then what good is any of this, right?  So here is ‘A Folded Flag’. The recording is far from done but I think the sentiment today is far more important. Give it a listen. Thanks y’all.

Happy Memorial Day
